Casually Formal?

by Ryan Chambers on 01/30/12

I've been noticing lots of toned down and less coiffed hairstyles this awards/red carpet season. I must say its a breath of fresh air. Its not as fussy and finished and immovable as most of these "event hair"-styles usually are.

Having a less constructed and overworked hairstyle for a formal event does 1 of 2 things:

-It allows you to have more fun with your makeup look. You can do a bolder eye or lip without looking overdone and hard. No one wants to be confused with a drag queen! LOL.

-Softer hair = Younger. I'm not saying a classic french twist or chignon can't be youthful, but leaving a bit of softness either in the front to frame the face or in the back to give some movement to the hairstyle, in my opinion, just looks more fresh and less "old lady wet set ".  Even some of the grandma's I know are opting for a blow out instead of sitting under the dryer for 45 minutes!

There is a bridge that CAN be gapped when it comes to formal hairstyling. As I say to brides, you want it to LOOK like it'll move even though it WON'T! LOL.

a good example of this is, my favorite... Madonna at the Golden Globe Awards.

Winter hat hair

by Ryan Chambers on 01/13/12

This has been an issue that's been bothering me for the past month. How to keep your hair intact when it's 20 degrees outside and a hat is not only cute, but necessary. An obvious plan could be to keep a brush or comb and a travel sized bottle of hair spray with you at all times. However, Cosmo has a couple of great ideas, too. Hope this helps keep your winter hair in check! -Heather

2012 is rockin' so far.

by Ryan Chambers on 01/09/12

Having just completed my first work week of 2012, I must say everyone (including myself) seems to be in the mood for a change.

No major overhauls or makeovers yet, more of just taking the existing look to another level of perfection. Hot in the wintertime!

My feeling for haircuts this winter have a major 1960's Bardot vibe with a a bit of a a Connecticut private school girl twist. Picture Barbarella meets the round brush and tamed the over-sexed bed head down to a polished and sophisticated "Sexxy Lady" look.

Color is all about adding some lightness and dimension to all the drab hombre highlights from last season. I was doing that look back at the turn of the century, except I called it something else... Its not really a polite name for color placement, so ask me when you're in my chair! ;-)
Lots of multi-tonal color with just the right amount of chunkiness to really make the highlights stand out. High, low, and in the middle. Why settle on being a brunette if you don't have to?

I'm thinking this year will be about having it all. If you've always wanted to be a redhead, then do it. If you want to try bangs (again) then we can do that, too... just don't get mad at me when you want to grow them back out!

I've had an awesome start to the new year, and I hope everybody else has too! Its set a really great tone for what's to come!
